Im considering doing a engine swap in my 1996 Honda civic dx hatchback. I am looking to do a vtec swap. right now I have a stock d16y7 non vtec. I was wondering which engine I should swap for if I am doing a turbo in the new block. I would prefer something with more displacement, but I am open to suggestions. I just don't know which to swap for and if the bolt alignment is going to be hell. please help? I'd prefer someone with experience, not some fake tuner teenager who just wants to tell me to keep it stock and put a 90$ exhaust and manifold on (i've had this problem asking people before). No offense, I dont want some cheap crappy sounding civic like the 95% that I can outrun on foot. Right now I have a throttle body spacer, Cold air intake, and 10.3mm spark wires and I like how it sounds and runs, but I am looking for something that can really put me in my seat. I love my car which is why I am not just getting a s duce. with that being said, id like to hear ideas and swaps that can actually work. Thanks.

You have many options for the Civic. If you want to stay with a small displacement, high strung, high revving 4banger one of the most popular choices is the B18C out of a JDM Acrua Integra Type R.

If you want something with a larger displacement there is the H22A out of a Honda Prelude, however it takes up a lot of room in the engine bay.

There is always the option of going with a new K series engine such as the K20A2 from an Acura RSX type S. Much more stock power, but going to be more expensive because they are much newer than what is now considered an "old" engine like the B or H series.

Now, how you said bolts lining up... they wont. None of the mounts will fit a different engine. There are swap kits out there though. Some engines require you to do a bit of welding and custom fabrication as well. Unless you are swapping same for same, nothing will bolt right up. Swaps arent exactly childs play, but they arent overly difficult either. If it is your first swap plan for a week. Not a weekend. Its always good to have a friend help and in a perfect world, they would know how to weld well.

The most common engine swap for civics is the B16 engine because that is the strongest engine that those years civics come in. There are different types of B16 engines. Look up the Honda B series engines in wikipedia.org and see which one fits your interest. The B16 will probably be the best swap for your car.

Why do you want to hot rod a civic? It's been done so many times its mundane and it will cost a fortune to get it to the point that's actually fast. If I was in your position I would sell the civic to someone who wants a simple commuter car and buy something else that will respond better to performance parts. Something like a Mustang or 240.

i would look in to the 89-91 civic or crx tranny what you will need is the clutch pedal and clutch cable along with the tranny, flywheel, and clutch. every thing would just bolt up simple if you know what your doing if you dont have the know i would get someone who knows wat to do. price for parts is diffrent from state to state. here where im from it would run me like $500 for a change over
