Honda Accord 2002 V6 Buy or not?

Question

Hi guys, I'm a college student in need of a car. I'm currently looking at a Honda Accord 2002 V6 (http://newyork.craigslist.org/que/cto/2287032626.html) very low mileage, nearing 46,000, the guy is selling it for $5,900 (which is well below book value). I've spoken with the guy, he said he has changed the oil every 3k, performed maintenance, etc, however he is the second owner and he is unaware of how the previous owner took care of it. I ran a carfax and i see that he purchased the vehicle 8/06/10 with 37,115 miles on it. Carfax looks good, clean title. However I'm reading many reviews and there is a significant amount of reviews about faulty transmissions... i also see people who praise the accord for its reliability and swear that they are approaching the 100-150k mark and its still running fine. so should i bite the bullet here and purchase it? Whats your input?

You are right to be concerned about the transmission - Honda had serious trouble with the V6 automatic transmissions from 1999-2004 (first source).



There is another reason to avoid this one, though. It closely fits the profile of a popular Craigslist scam. The second source has an excellent explanation of how that works. EDIT - if you google "646-270-3922 +accord" (the seller's phone number) you will see he also offered a nearly identical 2002 Accord, but black, with 71K miles on the same day.



I have learned not to trust Carfax reports. My son signed up when he was looking for a car and he bought one with a clean report. When we were working under the hood we noticed yellow wrecking yard markings on all the body pieces - it had been wrecked and repaired with salvaged parts. He got a report on the Accord my daughter already had, and the report showed it was originally a fleet vehicle, contrary to the official title and the original sales contract. It also did not show the car had been stolen and recovered - the original owner told us about that. Others have had worse trouble with Carfax - see the third source.

Absolutely. You seem to have done your homework on the car and it is perfect. low mileage like that is rare. It is a great price, well maintained and has the powerful v6. You barely need to do maintenance on these cars. The car will last so get it
