There is a range of engines available, these are the most popular swaps,

B16A2 (various SiR/VTi civics)

B16B @ 185bhp (ek9 civic type-r, JDM)

H22a @ 197bhp (212 JDM) from prelude SiR

B18C4 @ 170bhp (civic MB6 VTI-S)

B18C1 @ 170bhp (acura integra GSR)

B18C5 @ 187bhp (UKDM honda integra type-r)

B18C @ 195bhp (JDM honda integra type-r DC2)

K20A @ 200bhp (212 JDM) honda civic type-r EP3

K20A @ 220bhp ( JDM honda integra DC5)

best performance will be from either the K20 or the B18C (JDM), but they are expensive, all are DOHC VTEC engines. you can pick up a 93 civic stock with the B16A2, but they are jap import only

depends, your civic is already D-series, do you intend to just replace with the same (or similar) or do you want to upgrade to something more expensive and powerful.

Most D-series engines will fit, however you would have to get a OBD I engine(like the d16z6), or upgrade the wiring for OBD II, or downgrade (not recommended for OBD 0).

i would stick with the D16Z6 that came in it. (to replace the old one).

unless your ready to spend a few thousand, then i would do a GS-R swap (B18C1)

I would suggest a B18C1 motor from the Integra for maximum performance.

The B16 motor is another solid choice.

If you have an unlimited amount of money to spend, the K series is the best option, but definitely the most expensive.

Its got a D series engine in it now, so you could put another D series without much problem (D16Y8, D16A6, etc) or you could fork out some more dough for a B series engine, but i've heard you need different engine mounts for this one.

b16, b18c1(gsr),or b18c5(typeR). b series are the easiest swap anything past that will take more time and money. get a b16 very easy swap and nice power for a 1st swap.
